In Mayan language, Akumal means “the place of the turtle”. Akumal was once a seaport and trading center of the Maya. Akumal was part of a sprawling coconut plantation until 1925. Since 1960s, Akumal was introduced to world-class divers and has grown its name as uncluttered and tranquil paradise. Isla Escape Mexico

With the Mesoamerican Coral Reef right off shore, it is nice for snorkeling and diving. Local dive shops offer fishing trips.

Akumal is a picturesque village with nice villas, condominiums and secluded areas with wonderful beaches and restaurants.

On the Akumal beaches, two species of sea turtles; the loggerhead turtle and the green turtle, lay eggs. They live in warm, tropical oceans and use lungs to breathe air. Isla Escape Mexico

During the night form April through September, female turtles nest and lay about 75 to 120 eggs and hatch in about 60 days. These sea turtles look for food and refuge in the bays and at the reefs of the Akumal. Eight species of sea turtles exist in the world and four of them nest in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Akumal also has a lagoon called Yal-ku with varieties of colored tropical fish, multitude of flora and fauna and cenotes (natural fresh water wells).
