Isla Escape Cottage - Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve
Sian Ka'an is 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Tulum, it means where the sky was born.
It is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico and the most extensive tract of wilderness within Riviera Maya.
Sian Ka'an boasts natural beauty of 1.5 million acres (652,000 hectares) of pristine land and ten percent of total area of Quintana Roo.
One third of the reserve is tropical forest, one third is covered by wetlands and the remaining forms marine environment connected to the Caribbean Sea.
There are 1,200 species of plants, including 230 different trees, 266 species of birds, 318 species of butterflies and 103 species of mammals including an estimated 200 jaguars and the West Indian manatee.
Its residents make their living by lobster fishing.
