Isla Escape Cottage - The Great Maya Reef 
The Mesopotamian (Great Maya) Reef is one of the Riviera Maya’s most magnificent natural attractions; the greatest coral reef in the Caribbean, the second largest in the world. It is famous for its diversity and abundance of marine life that forms a vast oceanic ecosystem; the largest and most complex in the Western hemisphere. More than 500 species of fish are inhabiting the reef. It is a myriad of shallow patch reefs, delicate coral gardens with mammoth coral buttresses and precipitous drop-offs, sand banks, islets, and immense coral atolls stretching from the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula southward to the Bay of Honduras, a distance of more than 600 miles. Many local dive shops are registered with the Riviera Maya Association of Dive & Watersports Operators (APSA).
