The region Cancun/Riviera Maya generates more than a third of total national tourism revenues in Mexico every year.

It accommodates approximately five million tourists per year, in which many of them are foreign tourists.

There are approximately 50,000 hotel rooms, in which the majorities are in the high-class segment.

Cancun and the popular destinations of the island of Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen, Akumal, and Tulum are called "Cancun-Riviera Maya". Together offering splendid lay-back and activity destinations.

Today, the tourism Mecca of Cancun houses over 30,000 hotel rooms along only 24 kilometres of coastline.

In just 35 years, Cancun has grown to a population of approx. 800,000 as people move to the area to take advantage of the employment opportunities offered by this development.

From 1989 onwards, Cancun started to expand southward up to the archaeological site of Tulum.

Including Cancun, the popular dive destinations of the island of Cozumel, off the coast of Playa Del Carmen, Akumal, and Tulum are called “Cancun-Riviera Maya”.

Cancun’s infrastructure is luring investors to further develop resorts along the still pristine Cancun-Riviera Maya coast to the south and Bahia de Mujeres to the north of Cancun.

Within the last three decades, population of the Cancun-Riviera Maya grew from approximately 20,000 to 1.000,000.
